In the new world of startup work environments, Zepto’s young CEO Aadit Palicha has emerged as a figure of an important workplace culture issue. A post on the social media platform Reddit that accused the delivery startup of a toxic work culture led Palicha to joke about it on social media platform X while the work-life balance has remained a popular discussion in India’s competitive tech market.
This included the recent fake post from a Zepto worker on Reddit which accused the company of having a toxic work environment. Responding to these allegations, 22-year-old Palicha took to X with a seemingly dismissive yet playful comment: “I have nothing against work-life balance. In fact, I recommend it to all our competitors”. Palicha has used the opportunity to explain himself saying that Zepto has not come out to address the specific allegations squarely.
The incident has emerged at a time when practices concerning the working environment are under growing focus, especially after the death of EY employee Anna Sebastian Perayil. Her mother Anita Augustine wrote an open letter to her employer stating excessive workload, which led to her daughter’s mental health issues as a result of stress becoming a topic of discussion regarding women’s stress in corporate India. The case has brought into discussion the fact that the companies required extremely high performance from employees and these may have fatal consequences.
